bott Targets Packaging Waste & Recycling
At bott, we recognise the need for us all to play our part in protecting the environment for future generations. We have an ongoing commitment to sustainability and are particularly focussed on recycling and on reducing consumption and waste to cut bott’s carbon footprint.
For example, since 2016 we have decreased our plastic packaging usage by 36%, or over 12 tons a year.
We are also working closely with our suppliers in this; for example, roof-racking systems previously were wrapped in plastic and delivered in boxes - they are now supplied on stillages (tailored reusable frames). This thinking is now being applied to other purchased items such as electrical parts.
- 115 tons of cardboard (separated & baled on site)
- 4 tons of plastics
- 150 tons of wood waste
- 750 tons of metal (sent for reprocessing)

We have also invested in harvesting rainwater at our Bude plant for use in manufacturing processes, and solar panels provide 60KW of installed electricity generation capacity.

Other carbon reduction initiatives in 2019 included the removal of single use plastic water bottles offered for hospitality, air-conditioning unit upgrades and on-site tree planting. A new flex-workspace at Ashby is geared up for alternative fuel van conversions, including electric vehicle charging points. It also features energy saving PIR lighting throughout (activated by movement).
In 2020 we will continue to make changes to reduce our carbon footprint, including efficiencies in our delivery fleet, lighting across all sites and the installation of further EV charge points. A waste compactor is also planned at Ashby, which will remove the need for 4 out of every 5 refuse pick- ups.
