Bott Ltd manufacture and distribute high quality Storage Equipment and Workplace Systems.
The Company recognises that almost all the activities of an organization or individual have some impact on the environment. The company also understands that in the interests of sustainability, it has a duty to continually assess the lasting environmental impact of its operations, and to minimise detrimental activities as far as reasonably and commercially practicable.
Bott Ltd will:
- Integrate at Board level, environmental impact appraisal and company environmental targets into relevant business decisions.
- Continually improve environmental performance through board level company objectives.
- Take effective action to prevent pollution or reduce any potential for pollution from its activities.
- Comply with current environmental legislation and forward plan where possible to meet future legislative requirements ahead of statutory deadlines.
- Seek to eliminate or minimise waste and optimise use of materials, as far as is commercially and environmentally practicable.
- Where material waste is generated, attempt to recover as much as is commercially and environmentally practical and will ensure that the remainder is disposed of using best available methods.
- Enhance the awareness of its employees and other business stakeholders and ensure that all are made aware of their own obligation to minimise lasting negative impacts on the environment.
Energy management and efficient use of finite fossil fuel resources have never been more to the fore than now. Companies worldwide need to carefully consider the impact that they have on the environment they work in, and energy is a key area of concern.
At Bott, we take our responsibility for use of energy seriously, and we pro-actively pursue ways to minimise energy usage. Our production facilities are designed and specified with energy conservation in mind.
Measures taken to date include:
- A pv panel array to reduce carbon-based energy dependency.
- Building materials incorporating a high thermal efficiency, and insulated loading dock door openings.
- Energy saving lighting wherever possible, coupled to programmable timers and photocells.
- Forced warm air recirculation from roof space to floor level, to minimise space heating loads.
- A camel back construction on the paint plant oven, resulting in naturally convected/reclaimed heat, to minimise energy input.
- Lead-lag technology and variable speed drives to produce compressed air efficiently.
- Common source plant heating using dual-fuel technology and super-insulated thermal fluid distribution systems.
- Balanced power factor correction for all major plant coupled to soft-start motors and inverter technologies to reduce power surges.
- Production machinery that prioritises the use of low energy technologies.
- Latest Euro 6 emission standard delivery vehicles and optimally sized tractor units.
- Ever-increasing use of IT technologies such as email and videoconferencing to minimise passenger air miles.
- Regular planned plant maintenance to optimise running performance.
- Optimised route planning for delivery vehicles and field sales/service personnel, to minimise mileage.
- A company Energy Management Committee empowered to make energy saving changes in the workplace.
- Exploring and implementing the use of green energy technologies where commercially viable.
The company is aware of the need to minimise waste, and pursues this through a variety of targets and methods. Bott products are manufactured to provide a long service life and as a result are not expected to enter the recycling chain as early as many competitor products. Product durability and long service design life are therefore key to our recycling targets, and material specification is a key element in all R&D activities.
Waste is an inevitable by-product of manufacture and whilst every effort is made to eliminate it through design, some waste streams do exist and have to be managed. To this extent Bott adheres to clear recycling policies.
Steel scrap is consolidated and sorted on site before being collected and returned to the mills through registered scrap merchants; the same goes for other scrap metal types.
Liquid process effluent is treated on site at the rate of 6000 l/hr through a fully automated effluent treatment plant, and 80% is recycled for re-use.
Cardboard and plastic waste streams are consolidated and baled on site and returned to recycling depots on a regular basis. Pallets are increasingly based on Europallet norms and can be reused elsewhere.
Domestic waste destined for landfill is crushed and consolidated on site to reduce the number of skip miles.
Finally all wastes are only ever disposed of through certified outlets.
Manufacture of products requires the use of raw materials, and wherever possible Bott tries to minimise impact on the environment further up the supply chain. It does this through sensitive sourcing and procurement and by ensuring that materials once procured are used as efficiently as possible.
Raw materials are purchased wherever possible from outlets which offer a high recycled content or from sustainable sources. Steel is sourced from European mills which use recycled steel and iron in their input streams. Timber is sourced from suppliers who use sustainable forests.
Water used in process solutions is collected as rainwater from building drainage streams and treated appropriately before use.
Eco-friendly chemicals proven to be of minimal environmental impact are utilised in all process treatments whether for electro-plating or substrate preparation prior to painting. Paint free from carcinogens and heavy metals is specified and formulated as low-bake to reduce stoving temperatures, whilst modern application equipment recycles the maximum amount of oversprayed powder. Cardboard used in packaging is specified as T2, with a high content of recycled paper.
Efficient use of materials is controlled through the use of complex nesting software, and products are manufactured only when required, to avoid risks of materials degrading whilst in storage.
